If you’re anything like most new moms, you’ve saved a bunch of little mementos from the day of your baby’s birth… hospital bracelets, first hat, going-home outfit, that sorta thing. But if these items have been sitting around somewhere collecting dust because you just aren’t sure what to do with them… then you might consider making a newborn shadow box to display them all!
It’s an easy and gorgeous way to showcase all of the details from that very special day, and once you’re done with it, you can hang your shadow box in baby’s nursery! It’s super simple to put together, and will take less than 20 minutes to create.
- shadow box with linen display board (The shadow box that I created for my daughter, pictured in this post, is a white 11×14″ shadow box. However, there are other frame colors and bigger sizes if you have lots of items to display.)
- box of ball head straight pins (Tip: choose a color you don’t mind seeing, as some of them may be visible!)
- your baby’s mementos (Ideas: hospital bracelets, first onesie and hat, going-home outfit, ultrasound photo, handprints/footprints, birth announcement, dried umbilical cord, photo of baby, photo of family with baby… anything that’s special to you!)
How to make it:
1.) Gather all of your materials together.
2.) Remove the backing of the shadow box and take out the linen display board.
3.) Arrange your items on the display board where you want them (this step will take some thought & creativity).
4.) Pin down each item in its final place. I suggest using as few pins as possible, so as not to detract from the aesthetic of your final product. And try to hide the pins wherever you’re able to do so (e.g. in between clothing layers)! If you have something that’s impossible to hang with pins, then a little dab or two of hot glue will do the trick! I’ve even mounted heavy silver forks on a linen board that way; trust me, it will hold!
5.) Carefully place the linen display board back inside the box, and then secure the backing. That’s it!
